RECENT BIG CASES :

Government vs. Y. M.
Female client is accused of arson in burning a million dollar business. She pled guilty earlier this year to a MISDEMEANOR!!

Government vs. M. R.
This was the first case brought to trial of the Birmingham Police Department cold case unit. A man was murdered in 1989 and my client was accused of murder. It took the jury only 55 minutes to deliver a NOT GUILTY verdict in this case.

Federal Class Action
Lawsuit filed against a national retail chain for not paying workers overtime.  This case has settled for an amount that cannot be disclosed.

We have several interesting lawsuits pending. Our Vioxx cases should settle before May 2008 which we are happy to assist over 90 plaintiffs in recovering for their damages from that drug. We expect several other drug companies to settle in 2008.

Most hilarious courtroom moment: In a murder trial the judge was reading the jury instructions. My client's phone rang and the ring tone was the gospel song "We fall down... but we get up". Even the judge (Circuit Judge Clyde Jones) snickered at that one. The client was found not guilty by the jury.

People would be surprised to know: I dislike wearing suits. If I could wear a tee-shirt, jeans, and crocs sandals every day to work I would be in heaven on earth.

MENTORS:

Arthur Welch and Gwendolyn Guster Welch - These are my parents. Speaking correctly, this is my mother and my step-father. However, I consider him my dad. Both of them inspired me to be the best I could be at any thing that I wanted. They are inspirational and a rock to lean on.

My dad married my mother when I was twelve. Ever since then he has been very inspirational in my life. He is a loving person that has much more patience than many people that I have ever met. Most of all he loves my mother and takes great care of her. Plus, he taught me how to barbecue like a pro.

When my mother was a single parent after her divorce from my biological father, we had rough times. We lived in a housing projects for a couple of years while my mother took her first job as a school teacher. She bought her first house and continued working on her master's degree and another advanced degree while working several jobs. She sacrificed so much for me and I appreciate it. Now, my mother wants for nothing. I make sure of that along with my dad.

Attorney Johnnie Cochran, Jr. - Perhaps one of the most famous attorneys in the world, Mr. Cochran persevered in tough cases and utilized preparation as a weapon. I follow that lead and over-prepare for my cases which gains me much success. Many opponents hate to see me coming because my philosophy is like Mr. Cochran's…I may not have a great case, but I may over-prepare and win the case.

Attorney Emory Anthony, Jr. - Mr. Anthony is a former judge and a current defense lawyer in Birmingham. Before and during law school I watched many of his trials in amazement at the way that Mr. Anthony commanded a presence in the courtroom. He and I partner on several cases a year, most of which we do pro bono to insure that poor defendants can get a quality defense. Mr. Anthony's work ethic and his fabulous attitude inspire me. Plus, he always has something positive to say, even when things are not going well.
