Few things get the kids more excited than a trip to the water park. That makes sense because water parks have got it all: the thrills of roller coasters mixed with the cool down effects of a swimming pool. Throw in a few water guns, a wave pool, and a lazy river, and you’ve got the ideal place to spend a hot summer day. In 2012, it’s estimated that 85 million people visited the 1,200 water parks in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and attendance at water parks grows by approximately 3 percent each year.
But sadly, with thousands of rowdy kids splashing around and having fun in the sun, injuries can and do occur. Yet while one may think that rough-housing and excited play might lead to most accidents, about 86 percent of water park injuries happen around water slides, according to Saferparks.org, and most of the time the accidents are caused by fast, slippery slides. As recently as August of 2016, a 10-year-oold boy in Kansas City named Caleb Schwab was killed in a water slide accident. There are very real dangers at water parks that parents and kids need to be aware of. Read the rest »
Summer means heat and LOTS of it. For some folks, the warmer weather is fun in the sun: golfing, bicycling, ball games, cooking out with friends, hanging by the pool, or enjoying Alabama’s many lakes and rivers. But there’s one thing most people don’t think about until it happens to them: burn injuries. And it’s a fact that the risk for moderate to severe burn injury is dramatically increased in the summer months. Read the rest »
In many parts of the country, winter is one of the most dangerous times of the year to drive. Rain, snow, and ice can make winter driving naturally hazardous, and holidays like Thanksgiving and New Years add the element of intoxication to the mix. While summer should be a naturally safe time to drive, since roads are usually clear of ice and snow, DUI incidents can be quite high and extra cautions, especially by Birmingham teen drivers, should be taken around the summer holidays. Swimming pool accidents can range from simple slips and falls that result in only minor scrapes and bruises, to drowning that can lead to lifelong brain damage or fatality. While not all accidents are avoidable, there are some steps that a homeowner can take to help avoid accidents around a swimming pool. These steps are not only important for general safety, but can also help avoid negligence if an accident does occur, which protects the pool owner from civil claims. Read the rest »
When thinking of marriage in the traditional sense, there are two components that come to mind. There would be a ceremony conducted by a public or religious official, and a marriage license would be established. A common law marriage is a relationship with the absence of those two elements. The AL legislature abolished common law marriages, effective January 1, 2017. Problems sometimes occur when only one party acknowledges the relationship as a marriage, particularly as it relates to marital benefits. In these instances the courts are challenged to make a determination of validity, which invites evidence which may be largely speculative and open to interpretation. Representative Mike Jones (Andalusia) introduced the bill and Governor Bentley has signed it into law. Common law marriages achieved prior to 2017 shall remain valid.
