Tragedy struck Macon County, Alabama earlier this month when a five year old boy was killed on his way to school. According to a WSFA news report, the young boy died after getting run over by his own school bus.
Eyewitnesses say the child exited the bus and then dropped his backpack. He then bent over to pick up his backpack, making him not visible to the school bus driver. When the bus pulled away, the child was run over and killed.
As tragic as this accident was, it is not an entirely isolated incident. Statistics show that the most dangerous times for school children riding on a school bus are the loading and unloading phases. School bus drivers, while heavily vetted, trained, and licensed, are ultimately human beings and make mistakes.
